Guide to BMW Warning Lights

Dashboard Warning Lights

Even with a stellar reputation for high-quality luxury vehicles, BMW models, like the M Models or X5, might sometimes need an unexpected visit to a service center. You might have to bring your vehicle in for service if you see a BMW dashboard warning light appear while driving on Riverside roads. Different BMW warning light symbols mean different things, ranging in severity.

Learn more about the BMW warning lights meaning with the service team at BMW of Greenwich. Then, be sure to check out other service tips and tricks to easily keep your BMW vehicle in optimal condition!

BMW Dash Warning Lights: Red Lights

Even though some BMW dashboard warning lights indicate simple fixes, other BMW warning light symbols are trying to let you know your vehicle needs to be serviced immediately. Explore the red BMW warning light meanings here:

  • Front Safety Belt: When this BMW dashboard warning light appears, it means the front passenger or driver needs to put on their seat belt
  • Braking System: This indicates a serious problem with the braking system. You need to visit a BMW service center immediately to keep yourself safe on Rye roads.
  • Parking Brake: This BMW dashboard warning light means your parking brake is on. If you release the parking brake and it’s still on, visit a service center. Also, sometimes this is simply the word ‘BRAKE’.
  • Airbag/Seat Belt Tensioner: This BMW warning light is telling you there’s a problem with your airbag or seatbelt tensioner. Have a service professional inspect these basic safety features as soon as possible.
  • Rear Safety Belt Off: A rear passenger is not wearing their seatbelt

BMW Dash Warning Lights: Yellow Lights

Some BMW warning light symbols will turn up in yellow. While these issues aren’t usually as serious as red-coded indicators, they still require your attention:

  • Antilock Braking System: The BMW warning light meaning of this light indicates your Brake Assist feature may not be functioning. However, it may also come on briefly when Brake Assist automatically applies your brakes.
  • Engine: Have your engine serviced as soon as possible when this BMW warning light comes on, as it indicates an issue with your engine, emissions, or components.
  • Steering System: Your BMW vehicle’s steering system is either not working properly, or power steering may be unavailable.
  • Tire Pressure Monitor: This BMW warning light is triggered when one or more of your tires is under-inflated. A yellow light means the tire pressure is down by about 10% and a red light means the tire has deflated rapidly. This may be the result of ignored tread wear.
  • Dynamic Stability Control Off: This BMW warning light meaning is that Dynamic Stability Control has been deactivated.
  • Dynamic Stability Control: If this light is on constantly, you should have your vehicle serviced, as it could indicate a problem with Dynamic Stability Control. It should come on whenever DSC is engaged, as well. You can read more about it in your owner’s manual.

BMW Warning Lights Meaning: Green Lights

Green warning lights are usually just trying to tell you that a particular feature is in use! Here’s what to look for on your dash:

  • Auto Hold: This light indicates that the BMW Auto Hold system is engaged, automatically setting and releasing the brake in stop and go traffic.
  • High Beam Assistant: This light indicates that you have High Beam Assistant engaged, regulating the headlight beam for optimum illumination.
  • Fog Lights: This light signifies that you have your front fog lights on.
  • Lane Departure Warning: When this light is on, it indicates your Lane Departure Warning safety feature is engaged.
  • Low Beams: This light indicates that you have your headlights (low beams) on.
  • Parking Lights: When this light is lit up on your dash, it means you have your parking lights on (rather than your low beams or high beams).
  • Turn Signals: These are your BMW’s turn signal indicators. They’ll start flashing faster than usual if your turn signal bulb needs replacing when you’re commuting in Cos Cob.
  • Rear Safety Belt: This light indicates that a rear passenger has their safety belt on.

Other BMW Warning Lights

Read on to discover the meaning behind other BMW dashboard warning lights:

  • High Beams: This light comes on whenever you switch your beams from low to high.
  • Cruise Control: When you enter cruise control, this light activates to let you know that everything is working as it should.
  • Check Control: The Check Control indicator could be demonstrating an issue with one of many different components. Whether it comes on and stays on, or comes on for a few moments and then turns off again, it’s a good idea to have your vehicle checked out by an expert.
  • Service Vehicle: A yellow Service Vehicle light means you’re due for service. If it turns red, you’re overdue!
  • Light Bulb: The light bulb symbol is indicating a problem with one or more of your exterior lights. You can pick up fresh ones at our parts department.
  • Circle with Dotted Lines: If this BMW warning light appears, your brake pads are nearing expiration. Get them changed out as soon as possible.
  • Empty or Low Fuel: If you see this light on your dashboard, you have about 30 miles’ worth of fuel left in the tank!
  • Oil Can: The oil can, unsurprisingly, usually just means that you’re due for an oil change. However, in some cases, it indicates a more serious problem with your oil.
  • Thermometer: The thermometer warning light indicates that your engine is at risk of overheating. Since this can cause significant, lasting damage, it may be best to pull over and call a tow. In other cases, you might want to head directly to a BMW service center.
  • Battery: The battery warning light is a small rectangle with + and – symbols on it. Since batteries are high-powered components that can be dangerous to work with, you may want to have it inspected by a professional.
  • Exclamation Mark in Circle: If your brake fluid is low or your hill assist feature isn’t working, this light will show up in either red or yellow, respectively. In either case, you’ll want to have the issue inspected.

If you see any of these on your BMW X5, remember that dashboard warning symbols are no joke. Have your vehicle looked at as soon as possible.
