Car Battery Installation: Step-by-Step
So, you’ve got everything you need to perform a car battery installation in Stamford or White Plains. Here’s how to install a car battery the right way:
- Turn off the engine and engage the parking brake. Pop the hood, and locate the battery.
- Use your wrench to loosen the nut which connects the black/negative cable to the battery. Once it’s loose, use a gloved hand to remove it. If it’s stuck, proceed carefully. Don’t use a screwdriver to pry it off.
- Take the same steps to remove the red/positive cable, then loosen the battery hold-down clamps.
- You’ve reached the point where you can easily remove the battery. Use both hands, and remember that it’s going to be heavy. Watch out for leaks and set it down carefully.
- Check the battery track for corrosion. You can use baking soda and water to remove it, or pick up a specialized cleaning solution from our parts department.
- No matter what cleaner you’ve chosen, clean the cable connectors at the same time using the solution and a wire brush.
- When everything’s clean, it’s time to install the new car battery. Place it in the tray and tighten the hold-down clamps to keep it secure.
- Spraying a small amount of anti-corrosion solution on each terminal can help to prevent corrosion from forming on the new battery.
- Now connect the cables. Attach the red/positive cable first, and the black/negative cable second.
- Double-check the connections and try to move the battery to be certain that it’s secure.
- Close everything up and start the vehicle! You should be good to go.
Keep in mind that you need to work carefully and safely to avoid shocks and spilt battery acid.
