Follow These Steps to Reset the BMW Service Light

First off, what is the BMW service light? The BMW service light’s purpose is to alert you that your vehicle is due for maintenance, and it will display the number of miles or amount of time until your next recommended maintenance service. The process to reset your BMW service light differs slightly depending on the trim and model year of the specific BMW model you drive. However, the following steps will give you a basic overview of how to reset your BMW service light:

  1. Turn on the vehicle’s electrical systems but do not start the engine. If your BMW is equipped with a push-button start, you may have to push the ignition three times in a row, although on some models you will only have to push it once. Your owner’s manual will have specifics for your BMW model.
  2. Press and hold the small odometer button near the bottom left corner of the instrument panel until the service message appears.
  3. Release the button, and press and hold it again until the message says “Reset?”.
  4. Release the button again, and press and hold it. The message will say, “Reset in Progress”. Continue to press and hold the button until the message says, “Reset Successful.”
  5. Turn the car off and then start it to make sure the light was successfully reset.

What’s the Difference Between BMW Service Light vs. Warning Light?

The BMW service light tells you when it’s time for regular maintenance based on the number of miles and amount of time since the last scheduled service was performed. You can find the recommended service intervals in your owner’s manual.

The dashboard warning lights are activated when a specific vehicle issue is detected, regardless of the number of miles or time since the last service.

How to Reset Dashboard Lights on BMW Models

The basic steps for resetting the dashboard lights are similar to those used to reset the BMW service light. However, as you’ll see below, there is a small difference:

  1. Follow steps 1 through 3 from the instructions above.
  2. Release the odometer button after the service message comes on.
  3. Press the button (without holding it down) until the menu comes to the warning light that you want to reset, whether that be the brake fluid light, oil service light, or any other warning light.
  4. Follow steps 4 and 5 from the instructions above, and repeat until all relevant warning lights have been successfully reset.
  5. Turn the car off and then start it to make sure all relevant lights have been reset.

Note that you should only turn off/reset the dashboard lights when you are certain that the issue has been taken care of. Ignoring the dashboard lights can lead to serious problems and costly repairs.
