At the BMW of Greenwich Service Center, we often hear the question: “Why does my car shake when braking?” If you feel your car shaking when braking on the roads in and around Stamford, it could be a sign of a serious problem that should be addressed as soon as possible. This guide from our certified service team will explain why your car trembles when braking and what steps you can take to correct the problem.
Why is my car shaking when I brake? Take a look at some of the most common causes, and remember if you experience your car shaking when braking, you should schedule an appointment at our Service Center in Greenwich as soon as you can.
One of the primary reasons for a car shaking when braking is warped or damaged brake rotors. What are brake rotors? The brake rotors work in conjunction with the brake pads to stop your wheels from spinning. Over time and with continued usage, brake rotors gradually get thinner and are more likely to suffer damage. The excessive heat created when braking can cause the rotors to warp and the brake pads to slip. If this is the case with your vehicle, you will most likely notice that most of the shaking is coming from the brake pedal.
We recommend that you have your brake rotors replaced around the 70,000-mile mark. However, your driving habits and the climate you live in could require you to replace the rotors sooner. Let the brake repair specialists at BMW of Greenwich take care of all your brake system maintenance.
Another reason that a car trembles when braking is uneven tire wear or the wheel being out of alignment. Uneven tire wear can result from not keeping up to date with your tire rotation schedule. Wheels can get out of alignment when hitting a curb or a pothole on White Plains-area streets, and commonly will cause the steering wheel to vibrate when driving.
A tire rotation should be performed every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. However, there may be different service intervals recommended for your particular BMW model. Consult your owner’s manual for specifics. It’s a good idea to have your wheel alignment checked every 6,000 miles or so.
Why is my car shaking when braking as well as when simply driving? This may indicate an issue with your steering or suspension systems. A damaged component, such as an axle shaft, can cause vibrations while driving and when braking.
Whenever you set up an appointment for your next oil change or tire rotation, you should also request a vehicle inspection. This will allow our experts to identify potential issues early and can help to prevent more costly repairs down the road. At BMW of Greenwich, we offer the full range of suspension repair services.
Why is my car shaking when braking? As you now know, there can be several reasons why a car trembles when braking, so it’s best to have your vehicle looked at by the service experts at BMW of Greenwich. We offer rotating service specials and coupons, so you’re sure to save on your next BMW maintenance or repair near Darien. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our service team.
